Shutdown Preparation

Shutdown Preparation

If the Republican majorities fail to compromise with Gov. Dayton on a budget, state government will shut down July 1, putting up to 36,000 state employees out of work. To stop that from happening, AFSCME will ramp up our “We Want to Work for MN” campaign to convince a handful of Republican legislators to tax the richest 2 percent. If there is no budget deal, AFSCME state employees can expect layoff notices by June 8. They will qualify for unemployment insurance and can apply for it online on July 1. Our contract also requires the state to pay the employer’s share of health insurance for up to six months and to honor our agreement for recall. At this time, we don’t know who will be considered “critical;” the administration will make that determination at some point. Watch www.afscmnmn.org for shutdown updates and information on how to prepare financially.

Council 5 will have staff in the field working with their locals the entire month of June to keep pressure on legislators to support the governor’s budget and tax the richest 2 percent once Gov. Dayton calls a special session.
